FINDING TREASURES

I can hardly believe October is almost over!  Where does time go?  And friends, I can hardly believe I am telling you this but we are still waiting to get the replacement windows put in at our house.   Hopefully they will be put in later this week.  Last week it was raining on the day scheduled.  Life requires patience.

This morning I am sharing a few treasures we found yesterday while out antiquing.  It was a beautiful day so we drove up to Denver.  I was looking for one last old wind up alarm clock for my mantle display I will be doing for a New Year's mantle/2016.  I looked back at Jann's blog "Have A Daily Cup of Mrs Olson" so I could show you her idea last year which I plan to copy for a whimsical mantle.  Isn't she clever.  Whimsy isn't for everyone but I think it will be fun!

I also found this very old Victorian compote and in my mind I see cookies in it at Christmas on the buffet or mounded with whipped cream or trifle or ?????

And since this is after all a tea related blog party - how do you like this old cup and saucer I found yesterday?

During the winter months I plan to sew in the basement.  I wonder if you know how things have changed in terms of the cost of fabric and really the unavailability of 100% wool.  Back in the day when I sewed a lot it was everywhere but now what you see is blends and cotton.  If you do find wool it is incredibly expensive.  I have found you can find these old Pendleton throws and others from Scotland and Ireland inexpensively and they are 100% WOOL!  Besides using them as throws for warmth you can cut them up and use them in sewing projects!!!  If a throw has holes you can pick it up cheap and I mark the holes with large safety pins and cut around them.

The quality of this fabric below is incredible!

My last treasure is the beautiful white LACE vintage tablecloth!

  1. You certainly found some fabulous treasures, Bernideen. The compote is a beauty, the clock will be such fun, the teacup is lovely, and oh my, I'm sighing over the lace tablecloth!! What a great idea to cut up worn wool throws for other projects, too. I'd love to find some. Thanks for hosting, my friend, and I hope the Windows come this week.

  3. Your treasures are wonderful, Bernideen. I love the compote! A trifle would look very pretty in that. I am going to have to make a trifle one of these days as I haven't made one in a while. It must be lovely to be able to sew. I have so many ideas but I don't sew, so...That is a pretty teacup and I love your lace tablecloth! Hope your windows get put in this week. Thank you for sharing and joining me for tea today.

    Autumn blessings,

  4. Wow - you found some wonderful treasures, Bernideen! I loved that mantle of Jann's - glad you are doing one as well - imitation is a very sincere form of flattery to be sure.

Thank you for hosting your party - always a pleasure to be part of the fun.

I am truly sorry about your windows. It's a pain, but will soooo be worth it.
Remember how long it took ours back when? I blogged and moaned about it = but now I just sigh in happiness....beautiful and so comfortable, worth the wait even though it's easy to say it now, haha. Keeping my fingers cross it goes well and soon for you. Big hugs. ♥

  7. Well of course I love the clock! I can hardly wait to see what you do in '2016'. Thanks so much sweet friend for the shout out! I appreciate it so much! Gosh, who knew that about Pendletons. I wanted a fall plaid throw so badly and while on vacation in OR we slipped into WA and visited the outlet. Still set me back $65 and it was one of the cheapest ones. The price of wool is sky high that's for sure! Love all of your finds and I'm linking up today. Was going to last week, but thought the party started on Weds. Hopped over on Thurs. and decided to wait for this week. Thanks again!

  8. I always enjoy seeing your treasure hunt finds, Bernideen. I'm a huge fan of whimsical designs so I look forward to seeing your New Year's mantle. I'll keep my fingers crossed that the weather will co-operate this week so you'll finally get your new windows installed. Thank you for hosting and have a great week!

  9. October is one of my favorites months and it always goes fast. Pretty new finds. Thanks for the tip about Pendleton wool as I also plan to sew this winter. However, I moved my machine up from the basement. I rearranged a corner in a not-often used guest room so that I could sew near a window with natural light.

  13. I'm swooning and pinning all over this post. That is a great tip about wool for projects. I love the items you found. They are being added to a couple of my Pinterest boards so I can ogle at will. The plaid - sigh! The compote yes, I can imagine how fun it will be building a vignette around it. Super post, Bernideen. I feel raring to go thrifting now! Thanks for hosting. Tea with Friends always lifts my spirits.I am reminded that there are nice people out there, who share interests in common with me. It's a very nice feeling.

  14. I love those Pendleton throws, not sure I could cut them. Maybe the damaged ones I could, but I would have to hold my breathe. Thanks for hosting each week. Finally I have adjusted to having tea time posts to coincide.

  15. Hi Bernideen,
What fun you must have had treasure hunting and not thinking about selling your pretty finds in your shop. It's so hard to part with lovely thinngs. Or are you thinking of selling on e-bay? I just started and am not having much luck - the expensive postage is my problem I believe. I do love the old teacup, lace, compote and plaid wool that you found. Glad your hubby enjoys the hunt too! Thankfully my hubby does! Happy Tea Day Dear Bernideen! Thank you for hosting Friends Sharing Tea each and every week! Karen

  24. Bernideen, I love your finds. I need to go shopping with you! I don't get in the mood to sew very often these days, but last time I did I was shocked at the dearth of 100% wool. Back in the days when I made lots of clothes, it was my favorite fabric.

  25. You found some great things, Bernideen. I especially like that compote. Very versatile, too. I recently found an old wind-up alarm clock that I love using. And that's a great way to get good wool at a reasonable price. I'm allergic to wool, sadly.
