A ROYAL TEA TIME WITH THE SNOWLADY

A ROYAL CUP AND SAUCER FROM 1939

I am so excited to share this post with you because today we hooked up our new computer and amazingly figured out a few things.  Windows 8.1 is definitely more challenging so let's see if I can pull this off!  I am not the brightest person in the world but I just try things until something works.

I want to share a cup and saucer I recently found at a local antique mall.  It is of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth - the Queen Mum.

As you can see, the Snowlady agreed to be part of this photo shoot and I am also sharing a Spode plate with Victorian ice skaters that I recently found while antiquing.  Please join the Snowlady at the extra chair here and enjoy yourself a cup of tea.  Instead of taking down the tree today - it took us all day to work on the new computer.

Here is some history about my new commemorative cup and saucer:
1939 - KING GEORGE VI AND QUEEN ELIZABETH
VISIT AMERICA
I did some research and got so excited
when I saw this information about the King and Queen's Visit to America in June 1939. This cup and saucer is about 74 years old.
I wonder who owned it and how they acquired it before I purchased it.

This visit in 1939 was the first time that a reigning monarch came to America and at the invitation of Franklin D. Roosevelt.  The trip included a visit to Canada first and then to New York City and Washington DC and then back to Canada.   I don't have any other commemorative cups and saucers but this one is now in my collection.

The Queen lived to be 102 passing away in 2002.

Now, how about a nice Orange Slice Cookie to go with your cup of tea.  Here is what you will need to make these:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and mix these:
1 1/2 cups brown sugar, 1/2 cup shortening, 2 cups sifted flour, 1 Tsp baking soda, 1/2 Tsp salt, 2 eggs
Now set this aside!

Now mix this:  14 oz pkg orange candy slices, chopped, 1/2 cup sifted flour, 1/2 cup uncooked oats, 1/2 cup coconut, 1/4 cup water

Add the 2 mixes together and drop by tablespoon onto a greased cookie sheet.  Bake 350 degrees for 12-15 minutes.

    1. Ruth just told me that this is the King who the movie "The King's Speech" was about! Isn't that cool!

  3. Hi Bernideen and Happy New Year! So glad you have your computer. I am dreading having to learn a new system. I LOVE the teacup....no surprise. I'm sure that you know that that's the King George VI from the King's Speech, with the stutter, so well played by Colin Firth. Love your tea setting and the cookies look wonderful! May God bless your home and family with health, peace and joy in 2014!

  4. Ruth:
I would not have realized this unless you told me. You are very knowledgeable about all this Britishness! I have to tell you that makes it even more special! Thank you so much Ruth!

  5. What a wonderful post - and so fun to learn new things.

Your wreath you made is gorgeous, as is this pretty tea table.

I haven't been able to take any kind of pretty and relaxing tea time - a quick mugga while doing 3 things simultaneously seems to be the order of the day lately.

Hope things slow down soon. Glad you got a new computer, you will do fine!! : - ) Welcome back, dear friend!!

    Hugs.

  7. A lovely tea but I especially like the shots outside looking in! I see you have paperwhites! Mine are getting ready -- was a tad late in starting them this year! I adore them!

I wasn't sure with the computer issue if we'd meet for tea this week but am glad you've got it figured out so far and that I could link.
The teacup was a great find and I just love the plate with the skaters. Your wreath is lovely as are the views peeking through some windows.
    Have a fabulous 2014.

  10. Happy New Year and welcome back, Bernideen! What lovely photos! I especially enjoyed the peek at your tree through that beautiful window. Your vintage teacup is a treasure for sure. I think it's lovely that it depicts Queen Elizabeth's parents and yes, the king whom the movie was about. Your wreath is gorgeous! Those cookies look delicious and your tea setting is inviting as usual. Thank you for hosting and joining me for Tea Time. I wish you much joy in 2014.

    Blessings,
    Sandi

  14. It all looks so charming and I'm totally smitten by the tea cup having written about that visit that the Queen Mum and her King took all those years ago. (I found a newspaper that my grandmother had saved.) I'm also excited about seeing your tree still up. Mine will be up until next Tuesday. Enjoy your new computer!
