PENNY PHILLIPS MADE ME GO CUCKOO

I just couldn't resist a great title for this post because several weeks ago Penny showed us what she did with 4 broken cuckoo clocks when she turned them into shabby chic creations.  I commented to her on her blog that I knew I would just have to find one and I went lots of places without seeing any at all.

Finally, I saw two at an indoor flea market in a booth and I made an offer on the larger one.  It is from Germany and came home with us.  As you can see it has a new paint job:

It took me a while to understand a
cuckoo clock and how it works and
in the process I have learned more
because this is actually a Cuckoo
Whippoorwill Clock.  That means it
has 2 different birds that comes out
and sound different.

I have to admit that I love Penny's last name because my Grandfather was a Phillips and so that was my Mother's maiden name!  When I was a child there were lots of Phillips kinfolk  and great cousins in the panhandle of Florida where both of my grandparents came from.

  1. Good Morning, I just came from Judith's blog Lavender Cottage and I am delighted that I did. Your blog is so lovely and that clock re-do is fabulous :) We had a clock like that in your living room when I was a kid and I have no idea whatever happened to it. I always thought is was cool when I would wake up in the night and listen to it . . .counting the cuckoo's chirps too know what time it was. I am your newest follwer #846 and I would love to invite you over to visit and maybe even follow me back.
    Have a happy day.
    Connie :)

  10. The clock looks very nice in the colour you're painting everything - I like it better than the wood tone they come in.

  11. it looks beautiful in white, and so nice in your living room. I grew up to the ticking of clocks but it drives my husband crazy! I think they are comforting sounds :)

  13. What a lovely addition - I'd never have thought of painting it like that! And if you can't get it to work properly, you could set the hands at 4:00 permanently - always time for tea :)
