SMALL TOWNS ALONG THE KATY TRAIL

Here in Missouri there is a bike trail that goes for
hundreds of miles.  Not that I am a biker but I
do still have my bike from the 1970's.  It is in
good shape because I don't ride it. (Ha!)
Have you been to any really small towns
lately?  We drove to some yesterday that
the Katy Trail passes through.

The first one was Tebbets, Missouri:

then on to Steedman, Missouri:

and on to Rhineland, Missouri:

See that old house above.  It is in Rhineland -
another small town.  I noticed that it
had 2 front doors and remembered something.
Old stage coach stops used to have 2 front
doors as the ladies went in one door to a parlor
and the men waited in another parlor.

 I wonder?

After a while we crossed a bridge over the
Missouri River:

On the first street one of the old homes
 has an old ungroomed garden:

It reminds us of the "Secret Garden":

Hope you enjoyed the trail and you didn't even
have to ride the bike!

  1. Yes, we have been in some small towns lately and I always enjoy them. Thanks for sharing these views along the trail. That's funny that your 1970 bike is in such good shape cuz you don't ride it. LOL.

  2. Sounds like ya'll are really having fun exploring the towns in your new home state! For several years now, I have really wanted to go bicycle riding. We'll be staying in a B & B soon that has bikes, so I hope I get a chance to ride one. Watch out--it's been a LONG time!

  3. ...which is a very good thing becausemit has been awhile since I rode a bike. Charming town. I even like the very old building and you might be onto something there. Do your palms feel itchy seeing the Secret Garden? As if you'd like to get to work?

  4. So you ended up in Hermann huh? :) How did you get there to go thru those small towns? Did you stop at any antique shops along the way?

  5. So neat to visit small towns with some history!

Here in Pennsylvania, older farmhouses have to front doors. One was to enter the 'company parlor' and one came into the kitchen/family area of the home. The old kitchens were large with room for a couch or two and I know at least one family that had a tv in that space as well. It was likely where the idea for the sitting room/family room spaces off of kitchens came from. Perhaps this is what the house you saw had - a guest parlor door and a family space door.

  6. How funny to see this today. We are on a trip up north and went on a road we had never taken before. It took us through several small towns and I found such joy in all the old buildings and small businesses. There is really nothing like small town America, is there? xo Diana

  7. Hi my friend, oh I love all the places you just visited. These are my kind of places. How fun to get to go to new areas now that you have moved. Thanks for sharing. Maybe someday I can visit as we are hoping to go back to Illinois next fall.
    Have a great week ahead.

  10. Love the ungroomed garden, but oh my I absolutely love that old house with the 2 doors. Old deserted house make my heart go pitter patter and my camera jump out of it's bag and click away.
