This morning I stopped for just a few minutes to admire a few remaining flowers at our park here in Old Colorado City.

A little history:  In 1862 Old Colorado City was the 1st Territorial Capital.  This cabin above was the site of the meeting of the legislators.  Gold was discovered up in Cripple Creek in 1891.  Old Colorado City was a rowdy place back in those days!  They used the Midland Railroad to get to the gold fields.

SHARING MY TEA SWAP for "Friends Sharing Tea"

This week I am sharing a tea swap I participated in recently.  I am a part of the yahoo group known as Brunch Scones Tea. (check it out if interested)   Besides sharing recipes and information, there are several swaps each year.  I sat down at my kitchen table yesterday to have a cup of tea and peruse my just unwrapped new gifts which came from a sweet lady name Carol in Florida. Among other things, I now am the proud owner of an orange chenille pumpkin!  It is really fun!

I decided to use my bittersweet teacup and saucer (I already own) while studying my treasures.  The tea is delicious and came this summer from Prince Edward Island.  It was a gift from Sandi at Rose Chintz Cottage.  It is a black tea with wild blueberries.  It was so good I told my husband he will want to try it too!

Back to my Swap Treasures:   This lady is 
really talented and decorated the tin herself: 

 Even the card was very fallish.  I also received a lovely tea towel and sticky notes which I use regularly - so this will be great.  Then there was this darling quilted wall hanging with old vintage sewing items decorating it. Wouldn't that be terrific to have a sewing room and hang this on the wall?   I sew in my basement and that works too but I can dream - right?

By the way - did you see the article which starts on the cover of last Sunday's Parade Magazine?  It is all about the resurgence of craft making!  I found it very interesting!  I was interested because I made a lot of crafts in the 70's and here I too am sewing again too!

APPLE PIE AND PURSES and A Visit From A Fellow Blogger

Apple Pie seems somehow synonymous with a happy home.  Just the smell alone lifts ones spirits.  Since this is National Apple Month, we are celebrating this week and Apple Pie seemed like a must have! 

 This is just a simple - basic crumb topped apple pie:

Because this was a deep dish pyrex - I used a 2 crust pie recipe:
2 cups sifted flour, 1 tsp salt, 3/4 cup crisco, 5 - 8 Tb ice water

Here is what you will need for the pie:  1/3 cup granulated sugar,  
1/3 cup firmly packed light brown sugar,  3 Tb flour, 1 tsp ground cinnamon, 6 large tart apples (Granny Smith or Rome Beauty) pared, (I did 8 medium apples) quartered, cored and sliced, pie crust recipe below, 2 Tbs butter

Topping ingredients:  1 cup lightly spooned flour, 1/2 cup firmly packed light brown sugar, 1 tsp ground cinnamon, 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter

Preheat oven to 400 degrees
In a large bowl:  Combine sugar, brown sugar, flour and cinnamon - add sliced apples and toss well to mix.  Fill pastry shell with mixture.  Dot with 2 Tb butter.
Topping:  Combine flour, brown sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl.  Cut in butter until mix is crumbly.  Scatter topping thickly over apple filling.  I cut a long strip of foil and ran it around the corners of the pie plate to protect the edges from over burning.
Bake 400 degrees for 30 minutes until crust and topping are brown.  Cool pie before cutting Dust with Confectioners sugar

I may be keeping this one above because the handles were definitely labor intensive since they are stuffed with polyfill and that wasn't easy.  I also made the mistake of putting one of my favorite antique buttons on it - how can I part with that?  The fabric is vintage upholstery fabric.

Yesterday was very fallish so I set up a little tea with my English Hunt Dishes.  I will tell you the wind was blowing swiftly as I took these photos.   I baked some awesome Apple Scones and the recipe was so easy. Have a seat here and pour yourself a cup of tea.  I did a "quality control test" on the scone and they were delicious!  

 This scone recipe comes from the book "Afternoon Tea Serenade" by Sharon O'Connor which I have featured here before.  The recipe was originally from  Claridge's in London.

Here is the recipe:

You will need:  3 1/4 cups sifted flour, 1/3 cup sugar, 2 Tb baking powder, 1/3 cup unsalted butter at room  temperature, 3/4 cup milk, 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream, 2 cooking apples peeled, cored and chopped.  (my tweak - I also added 2/3 cup dark raisins and 1 Tb ground cinnamon)

Sift the flour, sugar and baking powder together in a large bowl. Add the butter, pour in milk and cream and form soft dough.  On a lightly floured surface roll the dough and cut into 2" scones.  Place on greased baking sheet.  Brush tops with egg yolk.  Bake 400 degrees for 15 minutes.  Serve warm with clotted cream.  (made 20 scones)

Mr. Roger's was right - "It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood"!
I went out this morning and managed to find enough flowers for a vase for my elderly neighbor:

I have just spent the last 3 days in my basement sewing for my shop - I have been creating what I call "Vintage Embellishments" using old vintage doilies, lace, collars, pieces of this and that and burlap!

I actually made 16 stockings - some red ones, etc not pictured.

FRIENDS SHARING TEA and Krispy Kreme Donuts

If you are already laughing - not to worry as I am laughing with you!  This  past week or two I have been at the sewing machine making things for my shop.  I haven't baked which is something I usually do regularly.   My husband and I spent Sunday afternoon in Denver which is about one hour north of us.  We always stop and get some Krispy Kreme Donuts on the way home. They took them hot right off the conveyor.  Oh my goodness what a treat.  I am also sharing the owl I finally decided to keep - the 4th one I made.  He has pieces of an antique collar sewn on the front of him.

I have shared my Bittersweet tea set before.

Please have a seat here by the window and enjoy some Strawberry Tea which I have drinking lately and really enjoy. Help yourself to a Krispy Kreme too!  I have what I would call a "Krispy Kreme Confession".  Here it comes!  About 10 years they opened a Krispy Kreme here in Colorado Springs (which has since closed).  I had gotten a root canal at the Endodontist nearby and was done.  Afterwards, I stopped at the Krispy Kreme and even though I could barely open my mouth I managed to eat 2 Krispy Kremes! Oh boy!

I know many of you are now enjoying fall in your areas and the changing of the leaves has begun.  So here is a little poem I have written for you :

Fall is in the air -
Don't say "I really don't care"
Get out - go forth - find time to see
This beauty everywhere.

Soon you will be inside
With winter on the rise
Sipping your cup of tea
Remembering the fall you now see!

I wanted to share some really cool fabric I found in an antique mall.  It was an old drapery panel probably from the l950's or l960's.  It has hunting dogs on it that are trying to catch pheasants. I made this tote bag out of it.  The crochet is also really old (I cut up a pair of crochet cuffs and also a crochet tie belt).   I found the fabric to be so interesting.
