CHOWNING'S TAVERN BRUNSWICK STEW

For some time I have been wanting to make a recipe I copied off one of my favorite food blogs FROM A WRITERS KITCHEN

I grew up on the lower peninsula which used to be called Tidewater,  Virginia and graduated from York High School at Yorktown in 1966.  Trips to Williamsburg and Jamestown were yearly and back in the "old days" we had a free pass to all the locations in historic Williamsburg.  My husband and I also lived in Newport News in the late 70's - early 80's and ate a Chowning's Tavern.

Some good old colonial cooking!  After making this last night, I was able to freeze a good portion for future comfort food!

HERE IS THE RECIPE FROM BONNIE:       http://fromawriterskitchen.blogspot.com/2010_06_10_archive.html

  1. I'm so glad you remembered this recipe and are now enjoying it. When we lived in Newport News, we made frequent trips to Williamsburg and usually ate at Chownings because you didn't need reservations. I remember that you lived in Virginia--just not exactly where. I grew up in Roanoke which is in southwestern Virginia.

Have a great and delicious weekend.

    Best,
    Bonnie

  3. Hmmm if it tastes half as good at it looks, it's a keeper !
Chocked full of vegetables, and freezes well, that's a time-saver.
    Have a wonderful weekend...

  7. Hi Bernideen, my hubby and I went to Williamsburg for our honeymoon almost 42 years ago! Whew, time flies!! We ate at Chownings. The restaurants there are sooooo good. We were just talking about that the other day. I'm your newest follower. :)

  8. It looks delicious AND I do make this(I have the cookbook)but I don't use much salt and I change the beans for ones we DO LIKE! I love the saying "the soup is BETTER the next day". In my house "It NEVER Survives that long"! But as we eat it, I always MAKE THAT STATEMENT, "This will taste better tomorrow". Everyone smiles KNOWING it will NOT be around that long, hehe!
Thank you for the temptation to make this. YOURS LOOKS "SOOOO GOOD"!!!
    Have a wonderful week,
    Hugs,
    Donna
