WATCHING "ROAD TO AVONLEA" for "Tea In The Garden"

This summer we have had a delightful time
watching the film series "Road to Avonlea".
Frankly, I didn't know about this series
even though I had a DVD copy of
"Christmas in Avonlea" and of course
the original "Anne of Green Gables",
 "The Sequel" and "Anne the
Continuing Story".  It was Gina who enlightened me and also loaned us
her series that covers 91 hours during
the 7 seasons.  We finished yesterday and of course - shed a few tears too!

Today I am telling those of you who are
interested - that this is a wonderful series.

I especially enjoyed the character of Hitty
King played by Jackie Burroughs who
passed away  at age 71 in 2010. Also, another
favorite is the character of Gus Pike played by Michael Mahonen who now is
 53 years old.

For my quiet - reflective tea time today I am
reminiscing about all the wonderful characters and also sharing with you
 some lovely Summertime Scones.

Here are photos of just a few of my
favorite characters from Road to Avonlea -
can you name them?

I am trying to think what I liked best about
this former television series largely filmed
in Ontario with glimpses of Prince
 Edward Island interjected.  It reflects
the time of 1903 to 1912.  I think it is the
feeling of "community" that I love the best.
The idea of a small town of people
 - more like a village really - working
together on their journey through life.
They certainly faced many difficulties
 and had many joyful celebrations.

So who wrote all of these wonderful
stories?  Lucy Maude Montgomery was born on Prince Edward Island and raised by
her grandparents.  Many of the stories are fictional knock offs if you will, to real experiences Lucy had after her
Mother's death when she  was growing up and going to school in Cavendish. (born in New London, PEI)   I see so many similarities
 between Lucy and Anne!

I think you would love these DVD's!

Please  let me know if you have already
watched this series or perhaps the earlier Anne of Green
Gables series?

Recipe for my Summertime Scones

See this recipe except I added 1 med-large chopped peach and 4 chopped med-large strawberries!
 Of course you probably know
two wonderful bloggers who live on PEI:

  1. Loved your post today Bernideen! It was like a little bit of friendly gossip over a pot of tea while looking at pictures of friends and family.

With three daughters, I think we watched "Anne With An E" repeatedly in many different versions of Green Gables and Avonlea. Recently we watched a version of Green Gables starring Martin Sheen as the brother, which was entertaining, but I do think the original actors were all perfect for their roles and so I much prefer the original movie.

  4. Dear Bernideen,
What a beautiful tea time! Your flowers are glorious and you know how much I adore red transferware! The scones look wonderful as well. Your garden tea beckons folks to your inviting repast. Wish I could join you out in your beautiful garden.

The Road to Avonlea was a delightful series of old-fashioned stories loaded with charm. RH Thomson also plays Matthew Cuthbert in the newest Anne series which aired on our CBC network.

My hubby and I watched the majority of the newest Anne series but we were both quite disappointed in it. The acting was superb however we found that the writers took Anne, a young girl from the late 1900's, and tried to make her over into a young lady of today with the same experiences that the girls of today might face. It is my opinion that Montgomery's stories are beautifully written and should be created for the TV screen following the books. To stray too far from the original writings just makes the story unrealistic.
The first Anne series {created in the '80's} was and still is extremely popular and the writers did not stray very far from Montgomery's books. I don't think you can improve upon the stories as they were written. Anyway, that is my humble opinion.
I read the books over again about every two to three years and alas, this latest series is a real let down for me.

Green Gables as well as Cavendish, New London, and Silver Bush, PEI all offer us so much history. It is a treat to visit these places and take a walk back in time. Bernideen, you would love it!
Thank you for the party and have a splendid day.

    Hugs,
    Sandi

  5. I have read Anne of Green Gables several times - and still have my original book my mother gave me when I was a girl. ♥

I have never seen either series and wish to do so as I hear so much about it.

Your tea time is absolutley stunningly beautiful, Bernideen - everything is so lovely - especially your garden.

Have missed you - glad to be back and hope to do more posting as time, energy and health allow. Hugs! ♥♥♥

  6. Some of the filming of "Road To Avonlea" was done not too far from where I live here in Ontario. It's a wonderful show and one of my favourites. I've always preferred it to any "Anne" series. What a beautiful tea table and garden you've shared with us. Lovely!

  7. Hi Bernideen. When I saw Avonlea mentioned I had to peek in for a short visit. Your garden is absolutely beautiful. I love all the old-fashioned flowers blooming there. A trip through a fairy tale! I have seen all the Avonlea and Anne movies and have a few in my library. I think I could have very happily resided in Avonlea those years ago. I love looking at the homes and cottages. Happy tea time to you..xxoJudy

  9. Oh how I loved the Road to Avonlea series! I was riveted to the tv every time it cam on. There was always a great "lesson" to be learned, just good clean cut family stories. I'm going to try to watch them again. The new Anne With An E was somewhat shocking. I don't know why they have to stray so far from the original story and sensationalize everything. I guess they think that's what modern tv audiences want to see and that's so sad!

Loved your red transferware and beautiful flowers!

  10. I grew up watching the Road to Avonlea series. I recognize: Felicity, Jasper, Gus, Cecily, Sarah Stanley, Aunt Hetty. It may be time for a major rewatch!

There's another TV series based on L.M. Montgomery's "Emily of New Moon" trilogy (which I found darker than the Green Gables and Avonlea series), but I haven't seen this adaptation.

Thank you for hosting and have a great week!

  12. Thank you for your high recommendations on the series, Bernideen! I watched the old Anne of Green Gables movie and started watching the newer Anne with an E, on NetFlix, but didn't finish it yet.
Your tea today is so charming and I am enthralled wit your pretty strawberry linens!! You find the prettiest things, my friend. I hope to share a post next week. I'm a little behind after coming home from CO.
    p.s. Your scones look divine!

  13. Oh Bernideen, you finished them? We have to talk now!! Didn't you just love how Felicity found Gus and took him back to the island and married him?! Oh I just loved that! But poor Stuart...
Your white fence and gorgeous flowers remind me of Hetty's Rose Cottage! Just beautiful. And your bouquets are just "dripping" with beauty! As Anne said about a bouquet on the Anne of Green Gables movie...Drink them in Marilla, drink them in!
    Talk to you soon!

  15. Bernideen, Road to Avonlea is a wonderful series. To be able to watch all 7 seasons sequentially would be great. I watched it when it ran on TV but did not necessarily catch every episode. I have seen some on reruns as well but on DVD you can see the story and characters develop. I really enjoyed the show as well as all the Anne of Green Gables you mentioned. It harkens back to a simpler way of life. Thanks for sharing your table today and have a great week. Sylvia D.

  18. I forgot to mention another great series. It's called Lark Rise to Candleford and is set in England in the late 1800's, I believe. I watched it free online.

  23. The very first time I watched this series on TV, it arrived in Italy almost twenty years ago, I felt so charmed by the story, which caught me more and more, but I had the opportunity to watch the replicas at least for twice, and then my attention was caught by the details of the dresses, the rooms, the groceries, oh, you cannot even imagine how much I love it , after 'The Little House on the Praire' it's absolutely my fav. !!!
I wonder how you could prepare such a perfect tea for that age and those characters, you're truly unique, Lovely Lady !

Trusting you're having the best of weeks,
I'm sending blessings on your way, sweetest friend of mine

    XOXO Dany
