Thanksgiving is so late this year that many people are just going ahead and getting their Christmas pretties out early. After all, our Canadian friends celebrated their Thanksgiving October 14th but ours isn't until November 28th.
I decided to start put out some recent finds and get the Christmas decorating going sooner! We have had a lovely fall and a little snow already but now we have been told that cold weather is coming our way.
Last week I found a couple items for the Holidays at the flea markets up north. One was a terrific picture that I just couldn't walk away from as it was calling my name. It is a very old Victorian framed handcolored lithograph (like a faux tortoise shell) that reminded me of a Currier and Ives Christmas card. This is the kind of picture that just takes you back in time! The frame was pretty scuffed up but we "doctored" it up. This buffet is in our den. I haven't learned the art of avoiding glass glares yet.
I also found two English Christmas themed cups and saucers at the flea markets. I have never made an effort to collect English Christmas themed ones before. I made the mistake of unpacking them at my store and right away a lady talked me into selling her the vintage holly cup and saucer! So......this one will be my first Christmas one to collect called "The Christmas Rose". This is the time of the year vendors put these out as they are more likely to sell.
Late note:
Tonight we opened up the frame slowly removing the cardboard backing and nails. The print or chromolithograph?? is marked 1897 J. Hoover & Son. Inside was a 2 page newspaper sheet from 1906.

Both the Victorian picture and white lady vase are so beautiful! If you ever get tired of either one of them you can send them my way, lol!
ReplyDeleteYes, we celebrated Thanksgiving here in Canada back in October and my mind has definitely turned to Christmas this week. It seems like time to start decorating yet I was wondering if it was too early but your post has me thinking it's not. :o)
Have a great weekend!
Bernideen! You know that print you got? I have one just like it- IF yours is one of the original lithographs (and not just a print) it is worth a LOT of money.IF it is in the original frame the value goes up tremendously. My Dad was born in 1897 (he was very old when I was born) and this was a print that he set up housekeeping with-a gift from his mother -the print was from the year he was born. Hardly any of the originals remain because they faded so quickly when exposed to the elements.
ReplyDeleteYou might want to have it appraised-I think you will be quite surprised.
Another beautiful post from you- xo Diana
Diana:
DeleteThank you for all this information. I didn't know any of this or how to tell if it were a lithograph. Maybe I should open it up? I love the story about your DAD!
Love, love, love!
ReplyDeleteOh I am itching to get the Christmas boxes out and decorate,
but I will wait until the day after Thanksgiving.
I've started decorating already as I always have a lot of things LOL. I love the pictures and the beautiful Lady in White. Great finds.
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend.
Mary
Your transition into winter and Christmas is lovely, Bernideen.
ReplyDeleteI am holding out with Thanksgiving because all of Dec and a into Jan till after Epiphany is enough for me for Christmas. Plus I host it and I think everyone would be freaked out if it didn't LOOK like Thanksgiving for us at that special dinnertime.
Loving yours, though - happy decorating! Hugs!
Do have a wonderful weekend, dear friend.
You are right - it is a rare Thanksgiving Day that I am not making the food and because this year we are invited to the Pastor's - it definitely changed things!
DeleteThat is a truly lovely Victorian print...it is just the sort that I'd not be able to leave behind either.
ReplyDeleteI have noticed the trend to decorate a little sooner. We will be putting up our tree the day before Thanksgiving because we'll be so busy the day after when we usually would. And I think, too, that a lot of us need a little Christmas right this very minute.
What a lovely print! I wonder if it is a Thomas Kinkade? I am tempted to add a few Christmas early...
ReplyDeleteGina:
DeleteHi - thanks for your sweet comments. This is not a Kinkade - I actually sold those at my shop so I am familiar. This is more like a late 1800's Currier and Ives. I'm researching!
I haven't pulled any Christmas decorations out yet, Bernideen. I sure do love that print that you bought. I love the vintage look of it. You'll be able to keep that up all winter.
ReplyDeleteNo Christmas decor yet. We are having our family Thanksgiving tomorrow at this old house. Maybe I'll pull out Christmas stuff on regular Thanksgiving weekend...
ReplyDeleteLove that picture you found!
What lovely treasures. I have two christmas tea cups - I might look for more this season.
ReplyDeleteDear Bernideen,
ReplyDeleteI am crazy about the Christmas print you got. It sets everything else off. It is so warm and lovely. It is a real beauty the way it is framed too.
I have the same clock which was in my family. Do you know anything about it? Mine has a statue on top which is separate.
Happy weekend, Ruthie
Hi Ruthie:
DeleteI have been told that this is a mass produced clock and not as valuable as others. I paid for $150.00 for it and I think that is all it is really worth retail.

ReplyDeleteA nice start to your Christmas decorating Bernideen. I noticed the print right off and do love the old fashioned scenes. Amazing to find newspaper pages from 1906 in behind, and now you can wonder who before you has hung this print in their home.
ReplyDeleteWe really are lucky to have a nice break between our thanksgiving and Christmas but now when I read the posts of my US friends, I'm craving turkey and pumpkin pie again.
I love nostalgic old prints like that, and this ones a beauty! So fun to see just how old it is. We came home to a bit of rain and clouds, and definitely chill. We don't have your evergreen in Colorado so things look so drab here. I'm ready to cozy up for Christmas too!
ReplyDeleteYour buffet is gorgeous, Bernideen! I love the old print; so charming! Your lady with the muff is lovely too as well as all your china. Thanks for sharing and have a lovely Sunday.
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Sandi
All so beautiful Bernideen... and that print... oooh how exciting to find hidden treasures inside... I do hope it is an original like Diana talked about!... xoxo Julie Marie
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, I LOVE that you found that old newspaper inside the frame! And I know what you mean about Thanksgiving being so late -- that really just gives us a few days to get the Christmas decorations up before December, so yes, I may start this month as well. That is a gorgeous Christmas plate. I think the old Christmas things were just so pretty!
ReplyDeleteThis is such a lovely post. The print is beautiful!
