TWO CHARMING MEMORIES FROM "THE RED PAISLEY" of Columbia, Missouri

Quite a few years ago, I met a Senior Lady name Mary Sandy who visited my shop about
twice a year when she came to Colorado to visit herdaughter.  One day on such a visit she shared with me that her Mother, Lucy Capen had owned a shop that was similar to mine but in Columbia, Missouri where she lived.
She said that her Mother had passed away at age 101.

Now I live in the same town as Mary
and I still remember the time she told
me that her Mother had a shop here in
the downtown on Broadway called "The Red
Paisley".

Today my husband and I went over to one of our new favorite places which is a non profit resale/consignment shop here in Columbia that is run by the The Junior League.  It is called "Upscale Resale" and we love it.

I was looking at their pictures and frames and recalled that this week the pictures are on sale
for  1/2 price.  I picked up 2 old Godey
Prints in frames priced at $10 and each now on sale for only $5.00 each.  I have 3 of these type prints in our master bedroom and just
love them.  These were bigger ones though.
As I flipped them over - there were
the time worn labels that read "The Red Paisley" and I had a major "recall moment".

My husband said to me "Mary's Mother probably put those stickers on the back of those pictures".  Now they will grace my downstairs tea room!  I can't wait to show Mary when she comes for tea!

  9. Oh Bernideen,
What an amazing story. That will make Mary so happy when she sees the back of your photograph. I do love those old photos. Now I am going to check the back of mine to see if it is marked with Red Paisley too. Looking forward to joining you tomorrow for Tea in the Garden. Blessings, Karen

  11. I think that's one of the coolest moments in collecting I've ever heard of. What a tale to tell your friend---you were exactly where you were supposed to be at that moment you saw them.

I have the Godey Ladies, as well, on a set of five burgundy-edged plates. I love to prop them on small easels at cool times of the year, when I have the pale green cover off the burgundy living room sofa.

I have a VERY soft spot for Godey Ladies, anyway---the dear woman across the street who taught me to read at age 4 had a big stack of her Mama's subscriptions, from 1912 and 1913, and she allowed me free reign to look at them. She had four rowdy boys, and I think a quiet, loves-to-read little girl was maybe a blessing in her life---so they always remind me of Miss Kitty.

  13. It always amazes me how small our world can be. My mom picked up so many antiques in Wisconsin and every now and then I sell something of hers to a customer in Wisconsin, not far from where she probably picked it up. Or I sell something that becomes a replacement for a broken treasure of Grandmother's. These always seem to be the most rewarding--reuniting items with the proper collector or would be heir.

Love your story---serendipity, comes to mind and smiles, of course. Sandi
